Table top care in the post-covid world

As we emerge from the lockdown in the UK and look towards the reopening of the hospitality industry, measures must be taken to halt the spread of the virus in these spaces. One such area of combat will be on the surfaces and table tops in hospitality spaces

Hard surfaces and Covid-19 – What we know so far

Studies have shown that Coronavirus can potentially live on hard surfaces for anywhere up to 5 days. However, it is reassuring that Coronavirus can be killed using the right products.

First, it is important to understand what the Coronavirus is. Covid-19 is an infectious disease described as an ‘enveloped virus’ meaning that it is surrounded in a layer of fat and proteins which protects it. This layer is dissolved with soap, disinfectant or alcohol. The virus is then killed after this layer is removed.

Cleaning your table tops

Disinfectant and alcohol are great ways to kill the virus but as we mentioned in our previous table top guide, our solid timber and veneer tops aren’t fans as it removes the lacquer and can leave the finish looking cloudy. Warm soapy water will be more than enough but maybe clean them twice over and of course, like your hands, we also suggest cleaning tops more regularly.

Outdoor table tops

Table tops that are used outdoors are usually sealed to protect them against the weather. However, they will still need regular cleaning. Increased cleaning does mean however that they will need re-sealing more often. Depending on the top, this is done through either oiling, sealing or waxing.

Please take extra care to make sure you have wiped away all excess soap and residue after you have cleaned the tops.
